Cleveland Hope and Cuyahoga Valley Church in partnership with the North American Mission Board (NAMB) and the Send Network want to plant as many healthy churches in the Cleveland area (and around the country) as the Lord would allow.  NAMB/SEND Network church planter candidates have…

  • Gone through an extensive 360 assessment with their spouse

  • Received significant training (part of which Rick Duncan provides)

  • Been connected into community with other planters, and

  • Been given a coach to come alongside and encourage them in day-to-day responsibilities.

On November 14-15 (Thurs-Fri), CVC is hosting a “Coaching Training”.  Would you consider becoming a “Coach” to a church planter?  FYI, you don’t need to be an expert in church planting!!  A coach is someone who encourages, comes alongside, listens well, asks good questions, and commits to pray for a particular planter, his family, and his ministry.  I believe you have what it takes to be an excellent coach for someone.

Let me answer a few questions that I know that I  would have:

Do I have to know about church planting?

No.  Everything you’d need to know is provided in a training.  In fact, non-planters likely make better planter coaches because they’re more likely to lead with questions and a listening ear more than answers.

I’m not in full time ministry—does that matter?

No.  You’ve shown yourself to be a good leader.  You’re being asked because of your character, commitment to Christ, and the value we believe you could bring to a planter.

I’m not a member of a Southern Baptist church. Is that ok?

Obviously, we value church membership, and we also value the role of the SBC.  Coaches will largely be from the SBC, but in some cases, we are willing to “color outside the lines” for the right person.

What’s the commitment level?

Over two years, we ask for 30 meetings with your planter.  We ask coaches to make 5 commitments:

  1. Preparation Meeting - Attend a live, one-hour video conference, two weeks

before the Map. In this meeting you will connect with fellow coaches and

facilitators, preview the Map agenda, and overview the preparation modules.

  2. Personal Preparation - Complete four preparation modules through the

Pathwright online learning platform including three coaching articles. Total

estimated preparation time is one hour.

  3. Coaching MAP Preparation - Join a new team of coaches in your city in this

    planning, training, and orientation experience.

  4. Peer Coaching - Practice coaching with a peer by phone or video conference

four times in the two months following the Map. Meeting #4 will include a look-in

from a Send Network Coach to provide feedback.

  5. Coach a Planter - Coach one church planter as assigned using the Coaching Pod

website for 30 meetings over two years. Coaching guides will be provided. Phone

or video conference calls are acceptable and encouraged. Planter spouse coaches

will meet 6-8 times over one year.

Hopefully, once you decide to jump in, you’ll want to keep going after the two years!

Can I meet via Skype?

Absolutely.  Meeting in person would be nice on occasion, but Skype works as an excellent option for those who don’t live locally.  However, we would like you at the training held in Cleveland.

Will I get assigned a planter after the training?

Not necessarily.  We do have a couple of planters who need someone right away, but having more people trained than we have planters is a good problem!  If that’s the case, you would be placed in a “queue” for a future planter.  We’re hoping to saturate Cleveland with healthy churches and so we’ll need to be prepared with coaches!

Some EXCELLENT training is coming in to CVC November 14-15.  In these sessions, you’ll learn particulars on how to care for planters, but you’ll also glean some information that will help you in your current role where you work or serve.

If this is something you’re interested in, please register before October 18 (see registration link below). If you have any questions between now and then, feel free to call Rick Eimers at CVC on his cell: 216-513-6290 or email him at reimers@cvconline.org.

Lastly, if after reading this, you have someone in mind that you think would make an excellent coach, please feel free to email Rick Eimers his name and contact information.
